Match Report: Allestree Romans FC Romulus v Melbourne Tigers U18s

Melbourne Tigers U18s suffered a frustrating 4-2 defeat against Allestree Romans FC Romulus in a game where the scoreline failed to reflect the chances and opportunities created by Melbourne throughout the match.

Melbourne started brightly and deservedly took the lead after some excellent pressure and battling work from Watkinson, who fought hard to win the ball and put Allestree under pressure. The move eventually opened up an opportunity for Williams, who showed great composure and power to finish emphatically from inside the area and put Melbourne 1-0 ahead.

Melbourne continued to create chances and looked capable of adding to their advantage. However, against the run of play, Allestree struck twice in quick succession to turn the game around and send Melbourne into half-time 2-1 behind.

Despite the setback, Melbourne could count themselves unfortunate not to have gone into the break ahead, having created numerous opportunities and played some excellent attacking football.

The second half saw Melbourne come out with real intent and quickly regain control of the game. Their dominance was rewarded when Watkinson found the back of the net to bring Melbourne level at 2-2 and give the Tigers fresh momentum.

Murphy was a constant threat, with his dazzling feet causing Allestree problems and creating openings in the final third, while Williams continued to show tremendous energy, working tirelessly to break up play and drive Melbourne forward.

Melbourne continued to create numerous chances and had opportunities to put the game to bed, but ultimately couldn’t find the decisive finish. Allestree punished those missed opportunities, scoring twice late on to take the game away from Melbourne and secure a 4-2 victory.

Despite the disappointing result, there were plenty of positives for Melbourne to take from the performance. The Tigers created enough chances to win the game and showed excellent battling qualities, attacking intent and determination throughout.
