Melbourne Dynamo produced a thrilling comeback to defeat Holbrook St Michaels 5-3 and book their place in the next round of the GoCardless County Cup.

In a game packed with goals, momentum swings and late drama, Melbourne found themselves behind before a dramatic finish saw them score twice in the final stages to seal a memorable victory.

Holbrook wasted no time in making their mark, taking the lead after just three minutes.

Melbourne responded with pressure of their own and were rewarded in the 20th minute. Goodband’s penalty struck the crossbar, but the forward reacted quickest to rifle home the rebound and level the scores.

Just 11 minutes later, Melbourne turned the game around.

Jack Bodill found space at the back post and made no mistake, rifling the ball into the net to put Dynamo ahead.

Melbourne continued to press and extended their advantage in the 35th minute. Following a corner, Tyler Withers was on hand to poke the ball home from close range, making it 3-1.

Holbrook refused to go quietly, however, pulling another goal back in the 44th minute to leave Melbourne with a slender 3-2 advantage at the interval.

Second Half

The visitors came out strongly after the break and levelled the contest from the penalty spot in the 55th minute, making it 3-3.

With the game finely poised, Melbourne needed someone to produce a moment of inspiration — and Oliver Grimshaw duly delivered.

In the 78th minute, Grimshaw weaved his way through the Holbrook defence before unleashing a rocket into the back of the net, sending Melbourne back in front at 4-3.

Holbrook pushed for another equaliser, but Melbourne showed tremendous graft to protect their lead.

Then, deep into the closing stages, the decisive moment arrived.

Danny Guild poked the ball home in the 90th minute to make it 5-3 and seemingly put the result beyond doubt.

The final whistle soon followed, confirming Melbourne Dynamo’s place in the next round.

It was a performance built on resilience, determination and a refusal to give up, with Melbourne battling all the way to the final whistle before two late goals from Grimshaw and Guild finally sealed the victory.

Man of the Match — Oliver Grimshaw

There was little doubt about the standout performer.

Oliver Grimshaw produced a spectacular goal to put Melbourne back in front and also made a crucial last-minute goal-line clearance to help preserve the lead.

A performance full of graft at both ends of the pitch earns Grimshaw the Man of the Match award.
