Bakewell 1-2 Melbourne Dynamo
Late strike steals the points.
A long Easter Saturday trip up to Bakewell awaited the lads as we entered the final knockings of the season.
Into the side came Hughes, Griffiths and Jones for the injured Walmsley, Bickerton and Muir who were on the bench.
On an interesting pitch to say the least, Dynamo started the game well and created some good positions without really testing the home keeper; Peverley, Gosling and Withers all having good opportunities. At the other end the two home forwards were willing runners and, in Bakewell’s 3-5-2 formation, centre backs Dawson and Bodill looked as tested as they had been all season. Cox did brilliantly to pull off a double-save to keep the score 0-0 at half time.
The chat at half time was about not letting Bakewell get the first goal and give them something to hold on to. That went out the window within 8 minutes of the restart. A cheap free kick was launched down the right channel and the centre mid from Bakewell lost his man. Bodill and Cox were caught in two minds and he drilled a low shot in the bottom right-hand of the goal. The homes side tails were now up, Goodband was introduced for Gosling as Dynamo looked to find a way back into the game.
Bakewell, now defending a lot deeper than they were in first half, made if very difficult to get in behind them and their theee big centre-backs were comfortable in heading everything away.
The first bit of good play from us in the second half led to the equaliser; a cross to the back post was headed back by Hughes in the path of Peverley, who’s side-foot shot nestled into corner for 1-1. On 70 minutes Muir and Bickerton were introduced for Nkrumah and Withers. To be fair to the hosts, they looked as likely to get the winner as we did. The game got stretched and numerous half chances came and went, the best of all went to Bakewell as somehow the lively number 8 did everything but score as his shot was deflected wide for a corner.
Gorman replaced Griffiths on our last change. Deep into stoppage time the ball was worked well to Peverley who hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner to steal the 3 points and give us 10th win in the last 12 games. That’s now FIVE injury-time winners for the lads this season, and the never say die attitude has certainly been there for all to see this season.
No rest for the wicked as we play Gresley Rovers Reserves on Tuesday night (18:30 KO) in our penultimate home game of the season.
