Melbourne Dynamo 1-3 Graham Street Prims
After 7 straight wins, Dynamo hosted Graham Street Prims at Cockshut lane, a team who had also started well this season. Both first-choice centre-backs (Dawson and Bodill) were missing through holidays and injury. Top scorer, Griffiths, was also away and Smith was a late drop-out also through injury. Into the side came Peverley, Moore and Muir.
Dynamo should have been ahead as early as the first minute; a ball down the right was latched onto by Withers who, crossed for Goodband, who inadvertently blazed over.
The next 15 minutes saw the away side come into the game. A long-range shot struck the post and then, on 25 minutes, they took the lead. A ball down the left wasn’t dealt with and the winger found the Prims midfielder in space. His low shot beat Cox down to his left.
It was 2 five minutes later, as a mix-up at the back saw Prims advance down the right wing. A deep cross was expertly volleyed in at the far post. Shellshocked by the quick goals, Dynamo needed to regroup. They were unlucky to not receive a penalty after the keeper took out Moore from a corner and a well-worked move saw Muir’s shot saved.
Half time; 0-2 and all to do.
Just like the start of the first half, Goodband had another glorious chance to score from a Withers cross. This time his left foot put the ball over from close range. The winger wasn’t to be denied for a third time, as Muir won the ball back in the centre of the park and fed Goodband. His first shot was saved by the keeper but his follow-up was volleyed into the net to half the deficit. Dynamo had their tails up and all 4 substitutes were introduced as Bickerton, Brown, Nkrumah and Hughes came on for Goodband, Peverley, Withers and Walmsley.
As the home side pushed for the equaliser, Prims looked more dangerous on the counter attack. Cox saved well to his left-hand side to keep us in the game. We thought the equaliser had come when Nkrumah finished well, but Hughes was deemed in an offside position as he crossed. It was then Moore’s turn to be denied as somehow his shot was saved on the line by the Prims keeper. With 10 minutes to go, Prims dealt the killer blow. A carbon copy of the second goal saw a cross from the right volleyed home by the number 9.
And that was that, a first defeat of the season after a great opening month. It certainly wasn’t our day, but if you get things wrong in both boxes you’ll get punished and that’s what happened today.
We move onto next week with an away trip to Teversal.
