The lads went into the first game of the league campaign, buoyed by 5 wins from 5 in pre season. The opponents were Derby Singh Brothers, who ironically were the opponents in the final game of last season only 12 weeks ago.
Holidays and work commitments hit the squad hard, with Dawson, Macca, Poynton and Hood all away and Moore, Nkumrah and Hughes all unavailable. New signings Walmsley and Bickerton were in the squad, along with B O’Reilly who stepped up from the reserves.
Dynamo started well and really put Singh on the back-foot. Long-range efforts from Peverley, Muir, Griffiths and Goodband all landed straight at the keeper. The deadlock was broken on 25 minutes, as Griffiths picked the ball up and curled a delightful shot into the top corner.
Further pressure followed, as Bodill and Peverley both struck the bar. Then on the stroke of half-time, the home side were awarded a penalty for handball against the Singh centre m-half. Supple stepped-up and his penalty was saved, but the referee ordered a retake for encroachment. Supple went the same way and the keeper guessed correctly again to deny him. It looked as though that would end the half there, but almost straight away the ball was thread through to Withers who crossed for Goodband to make it 2-0 at half time.
The second-half started with Singh coming on strong. Withers had a good chance to make it 3 for us and kill the game, but once again the Singh keeper came to the rescue. Singh reduced the deficit on the hour mark, as a neat passage of play saw their lively forward played in on goal on poke the ball home.
Dynamo were now on the back foot as singh pressed for the equaliser. The defence stood firm and Coxy made a good save to keep them out. Further chances came for Muir and Smith to put the game to bed but finally Bickerton won the ball back down the right and crossed for Withers to finish in the bottom corner. There was still time for another missed penalty, as the Singh winger blazed wide in injury time.
An eventual first game, but 3 points in the bag as we move onto Tuesday night at Gresley Rovers Reserves.
