Melbourne got us underway on a lively afternoon, donning their traditional blue and black vertical stripes, while visitors Bakewell Town arrived in striking purple kits with light blue socks.
It didn’t take long for the action to spark. A costly mistake early on handed Melbourne the initiative, and by the 25th minute they had made it count. First, Elliot Dawson rose to the moment to open the scoring, before Tyler Withers quickly doubled the advantage to put Melbourne firmly in control.
At the break, it had been an open and entertaining first half, but Melbourne held the edge with a deserved lead.
The second half began with energy from both sides, and Bakewell responded in style. On 50 minutes, a superbly struck volley brought them level and shifted the momentum.
Melbourne, however, refused to let the game slip. Just five minutes later, Jack Bodill restored the lead with a composed finish, settling any nerves. The drama continued on 65 minutes when Bakewell were awarded a penalty, only for Tom Cox to produce a brilliant save—an outstanding moment that proved pivotal.
Buoyed by their goalkeeper’s heroics, Melbourne pushed on. Ben Gowing extended the lead in the 75th minute, before Jack Goodband added the finishing touch with a calm and clinical strike on 80 minutes.
At full time, Melbourne emerged deserved victors in a breathless, end-to-end encounter. A strong attacking display, combined with key moments of resilience, ensured a much-needed three points.
