Kick-off! We get ourselves underway with Melbourne in their traditional blue and black stripes, while Gresley line up in a full red strip. A lively atmosphere sets the tone early on, with strong support urging Melbourne forward.
It doesn’t take long for the breakthrough. On 10 minutes, Melbourne take the lead in style. A sublime touch from Goodband creates the opening before he delivers a delicious cross into the box. Simpkins is perfectly positioned and makes no mistake, poking home from just a few yards out to make it 1–0.
Melbourne continue to show resilience, and on 37 minutes they produce a remarkable defensive stand. Not once, but twice, they clear the ball off the line in quick succession, denying Gresley what looked like certain goals.
However, the pressure eventually tells. In the 42nd minute, Addison Smith unleashes a rocket of a strike that flies past the keeper, bringing Gresley Rovers Reserves level at 1–1.
Melbourne respond brilliantly just before the break. From a corner, after some scrappy defending, the ball falls kindly to Simpkins, who slots it into the bottom corner for his second of the game. 2–1 to Melbourne.
Half-time arrives with a twist. Goodband appears to have scored a stunning “worldie,” but the effort is ruled out for offside following a debated flick by Griffiths. A strange end to what has otherwise been an entertaining half, with Melbourne working tirelessly and creating several chances.
Gresley get the second half underway, but Melbourne strike almost immediately. In the 54th minute, Regan powers down the right flank and delivers a pinpoint cross. Goodband meets it with conviction, smashing the ball into the back of the net to extend the lead to 3–1.
At 65 minutes, Melbourne make a change with Simpkins coming off after an impressive performance, replaced by Tovell.
Gresley respond once more in the 68th minute, pulling a goal back to keep the contest alive at 3–2 and setting up a tense final period.
As the clock ticks towards full time, Melbourne remain determined. In the 90th minute, they seal the victory. Goodband produces a moment of brilliance with a driving run and superb footwork before setting up Shadbolt, who calmly taps in to secure the win.
Full-time: Melbourne 4–2 Gresley Rovers Reserves.
A strong team performance from Melbourne, combining attacking flair with determined defending. Attendance was 95 — thank you all for your support.
