Melbourne fielded one of their strongest starting line-ups of the season, and also boasted a bench consisting of six substitutes, in preparation for all eventualities, as they looked to reach the final of the Derbyshire Cup for the first time since 2007. Their opponents, Allenton, having beaten Dynamo twice in the league already this season, both by comfortable margins.
However, it was Melbourne that started the brighter of the two teams. In the opening minutes, a Lee Scott corner was headed off the line, which almost went directly in. On 9 minutes, Ross beat the Allenton centre half in a foot-race to force the Allenton goalkeeper to make a save low down. On 14 minutes, a short corner from Burton found Guild, who’s shot was blocked on the line. From the resulting corner, Allsop’s glancing header went just wide. Moments later, Ballard rounded the Allenton goalkeeper and fired into the side-netting from an acute angle. It was all Melbourne; Allenton barely had a kick. Melbourne manager Salisbury knew that those wasted chances would come back to haunt Melbourne…and they duly did. On 22 minutes, a long clearance from Allenton found their centre forward in space, who finished past Melbourne goalkeeper Mark Croake to make it 1-0 to Allenton.
Despite conceding, Dynamo used the goal to invigorate them as they pushed for an equaliser. On 28 minutes, Ed Burton scuffed shot was flicked towards goal by Ross, which landed just wide. The same story again ten minutes later, as Lee Scott’s free-kick was headed by Ross, and clipped the outside of the post. However, despite all of their pressure, it was Allenton that struck the game’s second goal. Again, a long clearance up-field was not dealt with by the Dynamo back-line. The Allenton centre-forward squared the ball for their midfielder to finish unmarked from ten yards out, to make it 2-0.
Two goals down at half-time, Melbourne were not out of the game. They had a number of early chances in the second half, falling to Ross and Allsop, but they were not taken again. In the 64th minute, a goalmouth scramble from an Allenton corner brought their third goal, which effectively killed off any Dynamo come back.
In one last roll of the dice on the 68th minute, Salisbury made a triple change as he brought on Brough, Purkis and Adams for Brian, Bull and Ballard.
However, as the Melbourne substitutes were still finding their feet in the game, Allenton made it 4-0 on 70 minutes. A one-on-one chance was saved by Melbourne goalkeeper Croake, only for the rebound to fall to the feet of the Allenton centre forward to apply the finish from 20 yards out.
A consolation goal came for Melbourne in the 80th minute. After a mazy dribble at the heart of the Allenton defence, Purkis found Ross, who squared the ball for Brough to tap-in from 6 yards out. The game finished 4-1. Melbourne can feel hard done by in a scoreline that did not reflect the game. Allenton will progress to the Final where they will face the winners of Graham Street Prims and Swanwick Pentrich Road.
